I live alone but I am not lonely

The apartment is on the fourth floor. Most of the paintings on the walls are signed by Richard Chamberlain himself. From his balcony, he can see Los Angeles at his feet.   DAS NEUE BLATT paid the world star a visit at his new home.

You lived for many years in paradise, in Hawaii. Why did you leave?

There have been a few changes in my life, it was thus time to start a new chapter.
In Hawaii I lived mainly in big houses with a large garden, and that takes a lot
of time and energy.

How is your life here?

I grew up here in Beverly Hills where I have old friends and where I also get to know lots of new people. Just across the street there is a fitness center where I work out
five times a week.  

Are you single presently?

Yes.

For many years you lived with your partner, Martin. Has it been difficult
for you to adapt to the change?  

Martin was, and still is, an important part of my life. Despite him living in San Francisco we are good friends. It is for me a positive experience to start all over again
on my own - I am not lonely and I am not frustrated.  

Do you still believe in LOVE?

I do. I have experienced love quite often in my life and I think that love makes life worth living.  

Do you have the feeling that you have missed out on some things in your life?

One always tends to think that there was something left to do. However, all things considered, I can say that I am a contented man.  

And a happy man?

Well, what’s happiness? Happiness is a matter of personal yardstick. Of course, 
I sometimes wish I had taken a different decision. But I have to get on with
the life I have.

You have a superb Steinway grand piano in your apartment.
How often do you play?

I like to play and I like to play with gusto (grinning). However, I have an agreement with my neighbors, I am not allowed to play on weekends when they are at home.

Do you take care of your household yourself?

I do, I am a very tidy person, everything has to be in its place. Somebody comes in
to clean up,  but I like to cook for friends and for myself. I lead a simple life,
that’s what I like!
